Information on August 19 Fireworks Noise
The City is aware noise from an off-Island fireworks show was reason for concern late last Saturday, August 19. While this was not a City event, here's a bit more information:

This fireworks show was part of a large event park rental at Seward Park in Seattle. The fireworks barge was located on the lake between the Island and Seattle, and a permit for the display was approved by the Mercer Island City Council at the July 18 City Council meeting, as the event organizers met all City Code requirements.

While the fireworks display was permitted for a 10:35pm start time with an approved duration of 18 minutes, the fireworks vendor did not begin the show until almost an hour later, without notice to the City. The Fire Marshal and the Mercer Island Police Department have been in contact with the vendor and event organizers about this delay, and the vendor issued an apology.

We also understand concerns about a fireworks display taking place during a Stage 2 Burn Ban. Professional fireworks displays on Lake Washington are required to have an “exclusionary zone” that ensures shells fired will not fall on land. The Fire Marshal’s office reviewed the fireworks vendor’s exclusionary zone and found it met fire safety requirements.

The Fire Marshal’s office and City staff are updating administrative policies and code around fireworks displays to implement new time limits, noise restrictions, and cancellation parameters, ensuring a situation like this does not happen again. We also know it’s helpful for Islanders to be aware when a fireworks show will cause a disturbance. This display was louder and more visible to the west side of the Island than anticipated, and we apologize for the lack of notice. We’ll make sure to notify you of permitted fireworks displays moving forward and appreciate your understanding. The City is committed to updating policies and procedures to best serve the community.
Help Shape Luther Burbank Public Art
There's still time to provide your feedback and help shape the design for new public art coming to Luther Burbank Park. Artist Marsha Rollinger is designing 12 Mercer Island "Medallions" that will be inlaid into the pavement of the park’s renovated waterfront plaza. Islanders are encouraged to share favorite memories, stories about Luther Burbank Park, and more through a special page on Let’s Talk, where the artist will use these ideas to create unique icons and illustrations for the medallions. Simply share your input online through Friday, September 1 to participate.
Youth Activity Scholarships Now Available
As the school year approaches, the Youth and Family Services Family Assistance Program is offering financial assistance scholarships to help Islanders enroll children in youth activities. Qualifying activities include after-school-programs, athletic teams, and childcare.

The YFS Family Assistance Program supports residents during financially unstable times in their lives, helping to assess each situation and lead Islanders to resources that may be helpful. Anyone interested can get more information and confidentially apply for a scholarship by contacting YFS Family Assistance Coordinator, Cheryl Manriquez, at cheryl.manriquez@mercerisland.gov.

Reminder: Stage 2 Burn Ban in Effect
A Stage 2 Complete Burn Ban has been issued for King County due to the warm weather and increased fire risk. A Stage 2 Complete Burn Ban means:

All outdoor fires, including recreational campfires, pellet fireplaces, cooking fires, and ceremonial fires are prohibited.

Propane or natural-gas fired grills, fireplaces, fire tables, pellet smokers and other gas-fired appliances may continue to be used along with charcoal grills per manufacture recommendations. Please use caution when disposing of charcoal remains.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice. The fire marshals are carefully monitoring weather conditions related to wildland fuels in the area. When these conditions return to more typical levels, the ban will be removed.

You can learn more about Mercer Island burning restrictions, including year-round rules, on the City Website.
