Councilmembers Sworn In, Mayor and Deputy Mayor Elected

At the first City Council meeting of the year, City Clerk Andrea Larson swore in City Councilmembers David Rosenbaum (Position No. 1), Wendy Weiker (Position No. 3), Craig Reynolds (Position No. 5), and Jake Jacobson (Position No. 7) following their re-election last November. The elected Councilmembers will serve another four-year term ending on December 31, 2027.

Under Mercer Island's form of government, councilmembers elect who amongst themselves will serve as Mayor and Deputy Mayor on the council. The Council unanimously selected incumbents Salim Nice to serve as Mayor and David Rosenbaum as Deputy Mayor at the meeting.

Councilembers were joined by friends and family both in-person at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center and virtually on Zoom for the swearing in portion of the meeting. You can learn more about council governance and meet your councilmembers on the City Council webpage.

Eastside Fire & Rescue Now Providing Services on Mercer Island

Last July, the Mercer Island City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Eastside Fire & Rescue to provide fire and emergency medical services on Mercer Island beginning January 1, 2024. With the start of the new year behind us, Eastside Fire & Rescue is now Mercer Island’s provider of fire and emergency medical services.

Islanders are invited to two Fire Station Open Houses this month to commemorate this transition, where you can meet your firefighters, explore the stations, see equipment, and learn how fire services work:

  • Station 91 (Town Center) | January 10 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Station 92 (South End) | January 13 from 10:00am - noon.

Save the dates! Additional details on both events will be shared soon.

Still have questions or want to know more? While this is an official transition for the City and fire personnel behind the scenes, Islanders can expect the same level of service and both Mercer Island Fire Stations will remain open and operational. Visit our Let’s Talk Page for background information and a detailed FAQ.

Share Feedback on Playground Equipment for Roanoke Park

In 2022, Mercer Island voters approved a 16-year renewal of the parks levy, which continued funding for parks operations and maintenance in addition to funding playground replacements. The first playground scheduled for replacement is at Roanoke Park, and Islanders are invited to provide input about the type of playground equipment desired through a new survey. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and community members are encouraged to take it with the kids in their lives.

The survey is open through January 12. Questions cover the types of playground equipment, the use of different equipment, and general likes/dislikes of potential playground layouts. Responses will be used to refine playground concepts that will be presented to the community at the virtual public meeting on January 30. Learn more about this project on Let’s Talk.

Reminder: Winter Workshop Event

Don't miss it: join City staff for our next Winter Workshop event focused on non-native weedy plants, happening tomorrow, January 4. You’ll learn why we remove certain plants from our parks and why we encourage residents to remove them from their properties as well. You'll also get a demonstration on how to reuse removed plants by weaving baskets from ivy and blackberry, plus you'll have time to weave your own! The event takes place Thursday, January 4, from 5:00pm - 6:30pm at the Community and Event Center.

King County Connecting Underwater Pipe in Lake Washington

As part of King County’s North Mercer-Enatai Sewer Upgrade Project, about 2,000 feet of sewer pipe is being installed along the bottom of Lake Washington, connecting Mercer Island to the Bellevue side. Specialized divers are working to install the pipe (in water as deep as 40 feet) which is part of several miles of pipe being replaced across the area. The new pipe will connect to a pump station near the Mercer Slough in south Bellevue that brings wastewater to the County’s South Treatment Plant in Renton.

You can watch a video of the underwater installation and learn more about this project on the County's website.
