Celebrating the Fourth of July
The City wishes all Islanders a safe and fun Independence Day this Tuesday, July 4. Whether you celebrate at home or out and about, we hope you enjoy the day.

Remember: fireworks may be discharged legally on Mercer Island on July 4 only, and restrictions for safety and the consideration of others are in place. Fireworks are prohibited in all City parks and on school district properties, and only certain fireworks may be used. Familiarize yourself with what's allowed on our website.

Please note that most City services will be closed Tuesday in observation of the holiday and that week's City Council meeting will be held on July 5 at 5:00pm via Zoom.
Reminder: Pet Licensing
With Fourth of July celebrations just around the corner, Regional Animal Services of King County is running a campaign to remind pet owners to license their pets. Licensing protects pets with identification and other services, which is both required in our region and can be especially helpful this time of year. Animal Control Officers across the country report a 30% increase in lost pets during the July 4 period, but with proper identification, these pets can be reunited with their families much quicker. Learn more about licensing on the RASKC website.
King County Overnight Sewer Work Underway
Now through June 30, King County crews will grind and pave the road on 81st Avenue Southeast and North Mercer Way as part of ongoing work for the King County Sewer Upgrade Project. Night work for paving will take place between 9:00pm and 7:00am. Since permanent pavement needs time to cure, crews will close the roads while paving occurs. Daytime work will continue as usual. Vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians should follow signed detour routes and Metro buses will be routed through the detour routes. Learn more on the County's website.
Be Aware: Fentanyl Dangers
Last week, the Bellevue Police Department shared a very close call in which two area teenagers overdosed on fentanyl through vaping products. In addition to colorful pills that can look like candy, fentanyl is being ingested both intentionally and accidentally using vape pen cartridges. Just two milligrams of fentanyl - the equivalent of 10 grains of salt - can be lethal, according to the DEA.

Mercer Island parents are encouraged to talk to with their kids in direct and clear terms about the dangers of fentanyl. If you have concerns about vaping and drug use in your family, the City's Youth and Family Services confidential intake line can help. Call 206-275-7657 for assistance.
MIYFS Launches Summer Teen Program
Mercer Island High School students are invited to join a summer Photovoice Project titled Explore Your Space. This interactive project asks teens to tell their story about what it means to be a Mercer Island teenager using images enhanced with creative arts, alongside facilitated discussion.

Groups will meet on Wednesdays (time TBD), July 12 through Aug 30. Register and learn more on the MI Healthy Youth Initiative website.
