Join Us: Riley Cove Dedication Ceremony
All Islanders and neighbors are invited to attend a ceremony to officially dedicate Riley Cove - this small bay off Lincoln Landing is now named after Huston (Hu) Riley, a lifelong resident of the Island and U.S. Army veteran in the 1st Infantry Division. The dedication will be held at Lincoln Landing on June 6 at 4:00pm. A reception at the VFW Hall will immediately follow.

Riley was the subject of Robert Capa’s famous wartime photo of a lone American soldier fighting through the surf during the 1944 D-Day landing at Omaha Beach, featured on the cover of Life magazine. After returning from war, he remained involved in the Mercer Island community, including as an active member of the local VFW Post 5760 and the board of the Mercer Island Historical Society.

Please note: attendees should park at the VFW Hall or the Lid Park parking lot and walk safely along the I-90 trail to attend. Limited ADA parking will be available at the park site.
Reminder: Celebrate National Trails Day
June 3 is National Trails Day, and you can celebrate our trails by kicking off this year’s Letterboxing Program and joining a volunteer event. Simply register online for a day of service on June 3 from 10:00am - 3:00pm at Pioneer Park.

What is Letterboxing? It’s a scavenger hunt around Pioneer Park’s SE Quadrant. Follow clues to locate boxes hidden throughout the park, stamp your booklet once you find the clue, and leave your own imprint behind. It’s a great way to explore the park with friends and family.

Volunteers will also help City staff maintain trails in Pioneer Park through spreading mulch, clearing debris off trails, and removing non-native plants. Dress for the weather in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (think: long pants, boots or sneakers) and bring a water bottle. Small snacks, gloves, and tools will be provided.
