An Update on City Operations, Planning and Operations

Earlier this year, the City Council voted to permanently close City Hall. Since then, City staff, the City Council, and outside experts have been hard at work planning for a solution.

While City Hall may be closed, most City operations continue as normal. Approximately 80% of City employees continue to work in-person on Mercer Island with remaining staff working from a combination of home offices and shared office spaces on-Island.

The City is standing up temporary facility solutions for specialized operations that were displaced by the closure of City Hall, including City Court and Police Department facilities:

Municipal Court

At the November 7 City Council meeting, the Council approved a lease agreement with the City of Newcastle allowing Mercer Island Municipal Court to temporarily operate out of Newcastle City Hall. Court staff are currently arranging operating details, with information on accessing court services in Newcastle coming soon.

Police Department

While our Police Department staff have worked hard to continue normal levels of service without access to the Police wing of City Hall, day-to-day operations have been challenging for our officers. At the November 21 City Council meeting, the Council reviewed a budget allocation for Police Department portable facility solutions. These temporary facilities will provide dedicated spaces for the many specialized needs of a police department and greatly ease day-to-day challenges for our officers and staff.

Work on a long-term replacement strategy for City Hall continues. The City will consider a wide range of options that will result in a responsible, efficient, and sustainable future for City Hall operations. While much of the planning related to real estate transactions must be conducted confidentially through the City’s broker, community engagement on the long-term options to replace City Hall is anticipated in 2024. Islanders are encouraged to stay updated and engaged with this project on Let’s Talk.

It may be getting dark earlier, but the holidays are always bright with Illuminate MI. Make sure to catch the Island’s signature seasonal event this Friday, December 1!

The MIYFS Foundation’s annual Holiday Tree Lot is also open, this year on Saturdays from 10:00am - 6:00pm and Sundays from 12:00pm - 6:00pm, through December 16. WSDOT will release a travel advisory with full details closer to the closure. As always, you can see the latest road conditions on the WSDOT Real-Time Travel Map.

Wet, Windy Weather Ahead

With heavy wind and rain predicted for our region this week and weekend, keep the following tips and information in mind:

Heavy rainfall this time of year often leads to downed trees and debris. Keep an eye out for tree limbs and other fallen vegetation on roadways, paths, and parks and open spaces. If you see downed power lines, stay clear and report them: call PSE if they're stable, call 911 if they are arcing or pose a threat.

Leaves and debris can also clog storm drains leading to pooled water and other issues. If you notice a clogged storm drain in your neighborhood, consider clearing it if it's safe to do so. While City teams work to keep all systems functioning, the amount of debris can be very high this time of year.

As always, if you see something needing the City's attention, you can report it using MI-Connect: our online reporting tool. This platform lets you use a mobile app or the City Website to report things like broken infrastructure, clogged storm drains, and maintenance requests. These reports get sorted and sent to the appropriate department, and you can track their progress using the system - from when you submit to work completion. Check out MI-Connect and help us keep things running smoothly for all.
