Thrift Shop's Labor Day Sale Breaks Record

Over Labor Day Weekend, the Island's Thrift Shop held its annual Labor Day sale - with smashing results this year.

A line of shoppers queued around the store waiting for the doors to open, ready to take advantage of the 50% off promotion. Together, shoppers over the weekend purchased $35,000 worth of merchandise, totaling $17,500 in sales. All proceeds from the Thrift Shop directly support Youth and Family Services programs.

The City thanks all patrons of the sale for helping raise record-breaking funds for YFS, and the many staff and volunteers who help keep the Thrift Shop running. As always, Islanders' donations keep the shelves stocked and are greatly appreciated.

Protect Your Pets with King County Licensing

We all know how valuable Caller ID is on our cell phones, and the same holds true for having “Collar ID” on our pets. Remember: easy and inexpensive pet licenses are required in King County for all domestic animals, and Regional Animal Services of King County's "Collar ID" campaign is the perfect time to sign up.

Pet licenses allow Animal Services to quickly reunite found pets with their owners 24/7 and the program provides numerous benefits, including a free ride home and longer care periods if your pet is found. Learn more about these benefits and ensure your pet is properly licensed annually by visiting the RASKC website.

Community Center Blood Drive Coming Up

The Washington State Department of Health and the Northwest Blood Coalition are urging people to donate blood to help strengthen blood supplies in our region. Bloodworks Northwest, in partnership with the City and the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, is hosting a two-day blood drive on the Island at the Community and Event Center on Monday, September 25 and Tuesday, September 26 from 10:30am - 4:30pm. If you'd like to donate, simply make an appointment online or call 800-398-7888.

Learn the Dangers of Fentanyl

Fentanyl is an increasingly dangerous drug impacting the health of youth and adults in our region. To help Islanders be aware of the facts and know the risks, adults and teens are invited to attend the DEA's “One Pill Can Kill” presentation, hosted by the City's Youth and Family Services department. Attendees will learn how to protect yourself, your family, and others, as well as the dangers of Fentanyl and other drugs. This event will take place on October 7 at 7:00pm at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid that is being pressed into fake pills or cut into heroin, cocaine, and other street drugs to drive addiction. Illicit fentanyl is 50X more potent than heroin, and it only takes a very small dose of fentanyl to be lethal – as little as the amount that can fit on the tip of a pencil lead (2 milligrams).

All Islanders are invited to attend, and the presentation is appropriate for teens and parents of children of all ages. No registration is required.

Reminder: Town Center Parking Study

Earlier this year, the City Council directed City staff to resume the process to review and adopt the 2022 Town Center Parking Study report. The preliminary report features five main sections and four supporting appendices, including a parking inventory, community outreach summary, strategies and recommendations, and implementation information. Islanders are encouraged to provide their feedback on the draft report using Let's Talk - feedback is needed by September 19.
