Recognizing Veterans Day

Most City services will be closed this Friday, November 10, in recognition of Veterans Day.

This annual holiday honors the many individuals who have served the United States through military service and recognizes the sacrifices of their loved ones. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 following the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, which occurred on that date. The City of Mercer Island thanks all veterans for their service.

Please note: the Mercer Island Community and Event Center will be closed on November 10 and 11. If you have questions about accessing City services, contact the Customer Service Team.

Shop Small This November

At yesterday's regular meeting, City Council proclaimed November as Shop Small Month on Mercer Island. This annual tradition celebrated across the nation encourages shopping local this time of year.

Mercer Island is home to hundreds of small, independently owned businesses - from restaurants to retail shops, fitness studios, medical offices, hair salons, home builders, and more - that rely on your support! Through the end of the year, the City will be highlighting local businesses on our social media profiles to connect you with new products and services. It's an easy way to discover a great gift idea, a new dish you want to try, or a local service provider. Make sure to follow our social media accounts and comment on posts to share how you plan to Shop Small this season.

Bike Skills Area Grand Opening

After many months of planning, community engagement, and construction, the new Bike Skills Area at Deane's Children's Park is ready to open! Islanders are encouraged to join the City Council, Parks & Recreation Commission, staff, and fellow community members for a ribbon cutting event on November 15 from 3:00pm - 4:30pm. Come check out this new park amenity and commemorate its completion alongside neighbors. You can learn more about this event and the Bike Skills Area on Let's Talk.

Council Adopts 2024 Legislative Priorities

At yesterday's regular meeting, the City Council adopted the City's 2024 State Legislative Priorities, outlining the City's legislative needs for the next year.

The Council previously held a discussion to inform the development of the City’s legislative priorities at the October 17 regular meeting. This discussion included a brief recap of the 2023 State legislative session, a review of anticipated 2024 legislation impacting Mercer Island, and consideration of legislative priorities from partner organizations such as the Association of Washington Cities (AWC), A Regional Coalition for Housing (ARCH), and the Washington Cities Insurance Authority (WCIA).

Establishing these priorities allows the City to engage with legislators directly, quickly, and efficiently on issues that impact Mercer Island and our region. You can view the 2024 Legislative Priorities on the City Website.

Wet Weather: What to Know

Wet, windy weather has blanketed our region in recent weeks. Here are a few important things to know (and ways you can help):

Remember: the combination of wind, heavy rain, and falling leaves often results in clogged storm drains, which can lead to flooding and standing water on roadways. Please drive safely and slow down. High winds can also cause wet branches and debris to fall. Please keep an eye out for dangling tree limbs.

If you spot downed power lines, stay away and contact PSE. If they are arcing or pose a threat, call 911. You can see and track power outages or report new issues on PSE's website.

Public works crews closely monitor the weather and respond to flooded roadways and other maintenance needs. Islanders are encouraged to help by clearing leaves and debris from storm drains in your neighborhoods, if it's safe to do so. Your assistance goes a long way in keeping things flowing! As always, you can report issues online using MI-Connect. This is the best way to help our crews respond to issues (and you can track their progress).
