Wet Weather Reminders

Fall is here, and so is the weather. With storm systems passing through our area, here's what you need to know now that the wind and rain are upon us:

Heavy rainfall after a dry season often leads to downed trees and debris. Keep an eye out for tree limbs and other fallen vegetation on roadways, paths, and parks and open spaces. If you see downed power lines, stay clear and call 911 to report them. However, report power or connectivity outages to your provider.

Leaves and debris can also clog storm drains leading to pooled water and other issues. If you notice a clogged storm drain in your neighborhood, consider clearing it if it's safe to do so. While City teams work to keep all systems functioning, the amount of debris can be very high this time of year.

As always, if you see something needing the City's attention, you can report it using MI-Connect: our online reporting tool. This platform lets you use a mobile app or the City Website to report things like broken infrastructure, clogged storm drains, and maintenance requests. These reports get sorted and sent to the appropriate department, and you can track their progress using the system - from when you submit to work completion.

Young Islander Helps Launch Battery Recycling Program

Earlier this month, Bowen Nago, a fifth grade student at West Mercer Elementary, sent an email to the City Council suggesting the City bring a battery collection box to Mercer Island. Batteries often end up in the landfill, yet can be recycled if collected properly. His suggestion - part of a class assignment under the direction of West Mercer Elementary teacher Mrs. Kirsten Bourke - was a great one, and staff worked with Recology to bring a collection box to the Mercer Island Thrift Shop. It's now open for use.

The box allows Islanders to safely and responsibly recycle dry cell single-use batteries, rechargeable batteries, and cellphones, and is located inside the Thrift Shop's main entrance. Islanders are encouraged to bring in batteries to recycle, as well as usable electronics that can be donated to the Thrift Shop as part of efforts to help reduce waste on the Island.

The City thanks Bowen for his great suggestion and civic involvement!

Construction Storage Coming to Luther Burbank Park South Lot

Earlier next week, crews will close the back half of the South Parking Lot at Luther Burbank Park for equipment and material storage related to King County's North Mercer Enatai Sewer Upgrade project. This closure will begin Monday, October 2 and the County’s contractor, Walsh Construction, is approved to use the lot through mid-May 2024. The lot will be restored and fully reopened for parking in time for summer activities. Learn more about the sewer upgrade project on the County's website.

National Emergency Alert Test Coming Up

Heads up: this coming Wednesday, October 4, at 2:20pm, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts program. These systems are used during major emergencies to provide notifications across broadcast media and to your cell phone. These emergency systems test messages will be sent to the entire country on October 4 and will be clearly marked as a test.

Reminder: Learn the Dangers of Fentanyl

Fentanyl is an increasingly dangerous drug impacting the health of youth and adults in our region. To help Islanders be aware of the facts and know the risks, adults and teens are invited to attend the DEA's “One Pill Can Kill” presentation, hosted by the City's Youth and Family Services department. Attendees will learn how to protect yourself, your family, and others, as well as the dangers of Fentanyl and other drugs. This event will take place on October 4 at 7:00pm at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid that is being pressed into fake pills or cut into heroin, cocaine, and other street drugs to drive addiction. Illicit fentanyl is 50X more potent than heroin, and it only takes a very small dose of fentanyl to be lethal – as little as the amount that can fit on the tip of a pencil lead (2 milligrams).

All Islanders are invited to attend, and the presentation is appropriate for teens and parents of children of all ages. No registration is required.
