Civil Service Commission

About

The Mercer Island Police Civil Service Commission was established in accordance with state Civil Service law governing police (Chapter 41.12 RCW). The Civil Service Commission's duties and responsibilities as set forth by state law and city code. The Commission is concerned with the selection, appointment, and employment of police officers of the City.

The major duties of the Commission are to oversee the process of hiring police officers, approve hiring lists, and ensure that police officers are treated equitably and fairly in disciplinary actions. Civil Service Commissioners should have interests in the areas of law, labor relations, and human resources. Members should be able to commit to an estimated two hours per month to Commission activities. On rare occasions, the Commissioners may be required to devote more time to Commission activities in the event of a disciplinary hearing.

Meetings

The Civil Service Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month, at 4:00pm via video conference. The public is welcome to join meetings via MS Teams or in person at Mercer Island Community & Event Center, 8236 SE 24th Street, Mercer Island. Please send an email to HR@mercerisland.gov in advance if attending in person.

Staff Liaison

The Chief of Administraiton serves as Secretary/Chief Examiner and is the primary staff liaison for the Commission.

Membership

The Commission is comprised of three Mercer Island residents who are appointed by the City Manager for a six-year term. Other regular attendees of the meetings include the Police Chief, Police Commanders, and the Police Personnel & Training Sergeant.
