Why All The Flags? Pet Waste Campaign

Why the Flags Pet Waste Campaign

Are you tired of finding pet waste in parks and along trails?

Those abandoned piles cause more problems than just their “yuck” factor. Pet waste contains harmful bacteria that washes down storm drains and into Lake Washington. This creates a significant source of pollution in our streams and lakes, making our favorite places to swim and play unsafe and unhealthy. The Environmental Protection Agency states that 2-3 days’ worth of waste from just 100 dogs can contain enough pollution to close a beach to swimming and fishing.

So what can we do? The solution is simple:

  • Bring extra bags.
  • Scoop every poop.
  • Carry it to the trash.

The City of Mercer Island’s Stormwater team has launched an outreach effort to spread the word about the importance of scooping your poop in our public spaces. If you are interested in learning more and helping to get the word out in your community, contact us at restoration@mercerisland.gov
