Background

We will be constructing a 5’ to 6’ shoulder along West Mercer Way from SE 70th St up to SE 65th Street. Along with paving activities and traffic control, there will be some water utility improvements along that stretch of the road as well. There will be some traffic impacts and water service interruptions during the project but advanced notice will be given to those affected.

This will connect the shoulder on the east side of West Mercer Way from the south end of the island all the way to I90.

February 2023 Update

The new shoulder was opened to traffic in June 2022.

July 14, 2022 Update

Shoulder Widening 1    shoulder widening 2    shoulder widening 3

As of the end of May, OMA finished the shoulder widening project and received Substantial Completion. That portion of the West Mercer way new shoulder has been in use by pedestrians and bicyclists for 2 months now!

Week of May 16th, 2022 Update

Asphalt paving of the shoulder occurred on May 10 and 11.  Crews are now working on cleanup behind the new paving as well as utility casting adjustments.  Roadway striping may occur next week if the weather is dry.  Flaggers will continue to maintain a one-lane road during working hours.

Week of May 9th, 2022 Update

Asphalt paving of the shoulder is planned for May 10, 11, and 12, weather permitting.  Please expect some travel delays along this portion of West Mercer Way, as there will be a lot of equipment and dump trucks in the area on those days.  Flaggers are reducing this roadway to one lane during the 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM working hours.

Week of May 2nd, 2022 Update

OMA Construction crews continue working on this project in the 6500 to 7000 blocks.  Storm drainage and minor water system work has now been completed, and for the week of May 2, crews will be moving to the south end of the project to begin prepping and fine grading for the new paved shoulder.  Asphalt paving of the shoulder is tentatively planned for the week of May 9.  Please expect some travel delays along this portion of West Mercer Way, as flaggers are reducing this roadway to one lane during the 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM working hours.

Crews continue to make good progress on this shoulder improvement.  Last week OMA Construction installed a new 12” storm pipe crossing under West Mercer Way and several new drainage catch basins in the 6800 block.  They also started clearing and grubbing for the new shoulder north of SE 67th Street.

This week, the contractor will continue working in the SE 65th to SE 67th Street area, installing storm drainage pipes and also relocating a fire hydrant and three water services.  There will be a water main shutdown on Thursday, April 21st between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM so crews can abandon the old water service connections.  The affected residents have been notified.

Next week, crews should be wrapping up the storm drainage work and will begin grading for the new shoulder.  Paving is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 2nd.  Please expect minor driving delays through the work zone, as flaggers will continue to maintain a one-lane road during the 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM work hours.

March 31,2022 Update

Construction on West Mercer Way between SE 67th Street and SE 70th Street is continuing and progressing nicely!

This past week they have completed two new fire hydrant installs and installed storm drainage and catch basins on the west side of West Mercer Way. OMA is scheduled to install 1 new 1” water service line by the end of the week in preparation for a water shutdown scheduled for next Tuesday (April 5th) from 9 AM to 4 PM. There will be a service interruption to 22 homes that have been notified and will get a second door hanger on Monday, April 4th.

As OMA progresses next week with some water abandonments on Tuesday, they plan on setting a Type 2 CB on the East side of West Mercer Way and start a 12” storm crossing to connect to what they installed this week.

March 2022 Update

As of Monday March 7th, OMA Construction Inc. has moved onsite and started construction on this project. They will be working from 7 AM to 3:30 PM five days a week. Currently, OMA is clearing and grubbing just north of SE 70th St. on the east side of West Mercer Way and will be taking a lane during all construction activities. They will be working in this vicinity for the remainder of the week.

February 2022 Update
This project was awarded to OMA Construction Inc. on February 1, 2022. Tentatively construction is scheduled to start at the beginning of March.
