The Mercer Island City Council elected new leadership during the Council’s regular meeting on Jan 6, 2026.

Councilmember David Rosenbaum was elected mayor, elevating him from deputy mayor, a position he had held since 2022. First elected to the Council in 2019, Rosenbaum is a third-generation Washingtonian who moved to Mercer Island with his family after many years working as a congressional aide in Washington, D.C.

Daniel Becker was elected as the new deputy mayor. He was previously appointed by the Council in June of 2025 to serve in Position No. 7 after the passing of former Councilmember Jake Jacobson. Becker was subsequently elected to fill Position No. 2 on the Council in the November 2025 general election.

Rosenbaum and Becker will serve two-year terms in their positions.

After prevailing in the election in November, several Councilmembers were administered the oaths of office during the meeting to officially begin their four-year terms, including Becker, as well as Councilmembers Ted Weinberg (Position No. 4) and Lisa Anderl (Position No. 6). Councilmember Julie Hsieh was elected to fill Position No. 7 and was sworn in last month.
