City Raises Awareness of Important Issues With Proclamations
At its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, the Mercer Island City Council adopted proclamations to raise awareness of several important issues that impact Mercer Island and communities across the nation, including:
- National Recovery Month raises awareness in the Mercer Island community that recovery from substance abuse and mental health conditions is possible for everyone and promotes prevention, intervention, and treatment on Mercer Island.
- Hunger Action Month raises awareness about hunger in the United States. The Department of Youth and Family Services (YFS) continues to champion this cause as part of its mission to support the wellbeing of residents of all ages and encourages the community to give in support of food security efforts.
- Childhood Cancer Awareness Month honors the young lives affected by the many different diseases comprising childhood cancer, to remember those who have lost their battles, and to support the families and medical professionals who tirelessly fight to improve the prognosis for all children with cancer.
- National Preparedness Month recognizes the importance of emergency preparedness and remind the Mercer Island community to prepare for disasters, not just in September, but throughout the entire year.
- Reaffirming Our Commitment to Safe and Respectful Communities, in the wake of the school shooting on Aug. 27, 2025, at the Annunciation Catholic School, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The City of Mercer Island stands with the victims, families, friends, teachers, and first responders in Minneapolis, and affirms its shared commitment to protect the dignity and safety of children in schools and worshippers in faith communities, in Mercer Island and across the country.
