Tips to Prevent Package Theft
Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) would like to remind residents to take extra care when having mail and packages delivered to their residences, especially during the holiday season. Follow these tips to safeguard your deliveries and prevent package theft:
- Be home to receive your package. Some shipping companies allow you to choose a preferred time and date for delivery. If you know you’re going to be on vacation or out of town, request that the carrier hold your package until you return.
- Track your package. Receive customized alerts about the delivery status to stay informed and ensure that your package is delivered safely.
- Request a signature for deliveries. This ensures that someone is present to receive packages and reduces the risk of theft.
- Ship to a secure location. Consider picking up your package at the post office or a smart package locker.
- Be a good neighbor. Be alert and report all crime and suspicious activity. If you witness a package being stolen from a neighbor’s home, call 9-1-1.
If your package is stolen:
- Report the theft to MIPD. If a theft is currently in progress or has just happened, call 9-1-1. Otherwise, call the non-emergency dispatch line at (425) 577-5656.
- Contact the retailer. Some retailers grant refunds or replace items if the delivery has been confirmed.
