ADA

The City is developing a plan to identify, prioritize, and remove barriers, specifically for those with disabilities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a comprehensive piece of legislation that both prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life. The City of Mercer Island develops its buildings and infrastructure to meet these standards and, where possible, update facilities to meet these standards.

To better assess these needs, the City is developing an ADA Transition Plan as defined in Title II of the Act, that explicitly focuses on identifying pedestrian facilities in public Rights-of-Way, including curb ramps, crosswalks, and sidewalks throughout the entire city to find gaps in and barriers to accessibility. In public buildings,  doorways, hardware, and routings will also be considered. This plan will also define priorities for investments that remove barriers.

Mercer Island ADA Transition Plan

Throughout 2021 & 2022, the City of Mercer Island has developed a plan to identify, prioritize, and remove barriers, specifically for those with disabilities. This plan, known as an ADA Transition Plan, provides a detailed roadmap for the City to follow to ensure all can participate in civic life. The City’s ADA Transition Plan, will guide planning and implementation of necessary accessibility improvements. This effort specifically focuses on pedestrian facilities in public Rights-of-Way, including curb ramps, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Within public buildings, staff will look at doorways, hardware, and pathways.

The final plan was adopted by the City Council on May 3, 2022.
