Unauthorized Tree Removal in Luther Burbank Park Under Investigation

On May 13, 2025, a certified arborist employed by the City of Mercer Island discovered Mercer Island residents removing trees in Luther Burbank Park and on adjoining private property without authorization. The trees were removed from a protected slope area and the arborist estimated the cleared area to be approximately 2,500 square feet. 

This incident has been referred to the Mercer Island Police Department for investigation and potential charges. It is a clear violation of city code to remove trees or other vegetation from public property without authorization.
