Neighborhood Preparedness - Map Your Neighborhood
Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) is a free program offered by the City of Mercer Island to help Mercer Island neighborhoods prepare together for disasters.
The program provides presentations on steps to take after disasters strike and facilitates a discussion to help organize neighborhoods and give neighbors a chance to get to know each other.
Post-disaster studies have shown that individuals and communities with strong neighborly ties have higher survival rates and recover faster after a disaster.
How it Works
As your neighborhood’s “lead,” we ask that you plan the gathering, invite your neighbors, and spread the word about your MYN event. We provide trainers who will come to your neighborhood gathering and facilitate the 90-minute training which focuses on:
-
Neighbors getting to know neighbors.
-
Selecting locations for a neighborhood gathering site.
-
Identifying skills and equipment each neighbor has that could be useful in a disaster response.
-
Identifying locations of natural gas and water meters and how to turn them off after a disaster.
-
-
The nine steps to take immediately following a disaster.
-
And more!
