Biannual Sustainability Event

Safely dispose of the old equipment and household items that are cluttering your basement or garage at the annual Mercer Island Spring Recycling Event:  Saturday, March 27, 2021, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

This year, the event will be moving back to the Mercer Island Boat Launch.

**For public health and safety, new COVID-19 protocols will be in effect.  Please wear masks, gloves, and pack your items so they can be removed quickly.  Please refer to King County Public Health’s COVID-19 page for information about guidelines and recommendations.**

NOTE: This will still be cash-only for any fees required; please provide exact change!

  • Free Paper shredding will be offered onsite (limit 5 boxes).
  • Discounted rain barrels, compost bins, and worm bins will be available for $25 each, cash only. 
  • The City's Food Pantry is running low on funds due to increased demand from COVID-19. In lieu of food, please bring donations in the form of grocery gift cards ($10, $25 or $50), cash, or credit card to be collected by volunteers from the MIYFS Foundation. All are tax deductible and will help Islanders in need. Thank you!

What You Can Bring (Click here for flyer) (NOTE: This list may change due to COVID logistics)

  • TIRES: Limit 6 passenger tires per household (18 inches and below) free of charge. $3 charge for each tire on a rim (cash only). $9 charged for each large truck tire and $18 charged for each truck tire on rim (cash only). No oversized tires accepted.​
  • LEAD ACID BATTERIES: Car, truck, marine, motorcycle, and sealed lead acid batteries accepted.
  • ALKALINE BATTERIES: AAAA, AAA, AA, A, B, C, and D cell alkaline batteries. No rechargeable, cellphone, lithium, or nicad batteries accepted.
  • CARDBOARD: Please flatten. No wax coated cardboard.
  • CONFIDENTIAL MATERIAL SHREDDING: Shredding and recycling of confidential paper materials. Limit 5 file-size boxes. No exceptions.
  • PORCELAIN TOILETS & SINKS: Toilet seats, hardware, and base wax rings must be removed. $15 charge (cash only).
  • PROPANE TANKS: Residential five gallon tanks only. $5 charge (cash only).
  • REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS & AIR CONDITIONERS: $30 (cash only) will be charged for each refrigerator or freezer. $35 (cash only) will be charged for each household air conditioner. Please be prepared to pay at event entrance.
  • APPLIANCES & SCRAP METAL: Stoves, microwaves, washers, dryers, other metal appliances, metal push and gas lawnmowers (drained of oil and gasoline), auto parts, lawn chairs, barbecues, iron, steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals free of charge. $5 (cash only) will be charged for each water heater that still has insulation coating. Metals that are insulated, rubber or oil coated, previously or currently contain chemicals, paint, or hazardous materials will not be accepted. Light fixture ballasts and sealed drums will not be accepted. Any item that contains gas or oil will be rejected.
  • ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: DVD players, VCRs, stereo equipment, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, cellular phones (remove personal information) and computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice. Used toner cartridges are accepted. Computers, monitors and televisions will NOT be accepted. You can recycle these items for free at other locations - view the E-Cycle Washington website.
  • MATTRESSES: Mattresses and box springs, any size. $15 per mattress and $15 fee for each box spring (cash only). Vendor reserves the right to refuse any item it cannot recycle. No furniture or frames. No wet or soiled items.

  • Styrofoam. Styrofoam collection will be offered only at the Recology Store, located at 317 NW Gilman Blvd #22, Issaquah (currently closed due to COVID-19)
  • Household Goods, Clothing, and Miscellaneous household items (not accepted during COVID-19)
  • Scrap wood, pallets, etc.
  • Yard waste, stumps, branches
  • Construction/demolition debris (must be recycled at a King County Facility)
  • Garbage
  • Furniture
  • Plastic toys
  • Hoses
  • Window glass
  • Plastics

  • Pesticides/herbicides  (View the King County Household Hazardous Waste page)
  • Solvents or thinners  (View the King County Household Hazardous Waste page)
  • Household chemicals  (View the King County Household Hazardous Waste page)

  • Fluorescent light bulbs  (These can be dropped off at City Hall and the Community Center - currently closed due to COVID-19)
  • Other light bulbs  (Incandescent bulbs and LED bulbs can be thrown away)

  • Televisions & Monitors  (View the E-Cycle Washington page)
  • Motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, 2-cycle oil, steering fluid, crankcase oil, kerosene, and home heating fuel will not be accepted during the recycling event.  You can dispose of these items at the City's Public Works Shop at 9601 SE 36th Street (behind City Hall) Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:00pm only. Please call ahead to confirm access (206-275-7608)​ - Not available during COVID-19.
